Mechanical Ventilation Systems
On sites where Natural Ventilation Systems would be rendered ineffective (Height of building, lack of shaft space, extended corridors) Mechanical Ventilation Systems are installed to ensure effective drawing out of smoke and replacement of fresh air. Working in similar fashion to the Natural Ventilation Systems, a signal is received when the fire alarm is activated.

The mechanical extract pod situated on the roof fires up and begins extracting the smoke from the protected zone drawing fresh air down the stair core.
Mechanical Ventilation Systems are best suited on:
Very Tall Buildings
Where a building is so tall that there’s a risk of smoke-logging, rendering a natural system ineffective, a mechanical system can be considered.
Extended Corridors
If your building has extended corridors, you’ll need a mechanical system.
Your Tight for Space
Mechanical systems can perform with much smaller shaft sizes, typically between 0.6m2 and 0.8m2.
Whether a building can rely on a Natural Ventilation System or whether it requires a Mechanical Ventilation System is governed by a number of factors.
- How many staircases the building has
- How big the staircases are
- How many apartments the building contains
- The length of corridors through the building
- Height and amount of stories in the building
- Available space in the building
